Chapter Nine

Ethan’s gaze went from playful to hungry in the matter of an instant. He shifted, the muscles in his arms contracting in a way that made her mouth water.

“Tayla,” he murmured hoarsely. “I’m afraid I’m not capable of playing games right now.”

She understood what he wasn’t saying. It had been too long for him.

“I’m not teasing.” To prove her point, she unbuttoned her soaked shorts and slid them off her body. Her underwear went with them.

He sucked in a breath. “You are so beautiful.”

Right. She knew what she looked like. Slender. Athletic. Serviceable enough, but nothing compared to him. His pectoral muscles practically pulsed in front of her, rivulets of water slowly rolling down his honeyed chest, as if putting off leaving his body for as long as possible. Funny, even though she didn’t see angels very often, she’d become accustomed to their alien beauty. It was only now that she took in just how inhuman he was. Every movement was carefully controlled, yet fluid in a way no human’s could ever be.

In a word, he was perfect.

“Take off your jeans.” Her voice came out husky, evoking images of what she knew was coming between them. She might be determined to keep her heart firmly locked in her chest, but before they left this place, she would know what it felt like to make love with an angel. Her body demanded it.

Ethan unbuttoned his jeans and peeled them off his body with an easy grace that bespoke his angel heritage.

Now it was her turn to suck in a breath. She inched back, hand to her heart. Her eyes hadn’t lied to her that night when she’d gotten a glimpse of his arousal beneath the sheet. He really was huge. Nowhere close to the human men she’d been with. “Oh...my.”

He stepped forward. “My love, I—”

She unconsciously stepped back, realizing too late she was on the very rim of the ledge. With a shriek, she dropped back down into the pool of water. It engulfed her before she could catch her breath and she sputtered, trying to claw her way back up. An instant later, a pair of arms closed around her, and she was dragged back up to the surface. She broke it with a heaving gasp, forcing air into her burning lungs.

“Are you all right? Tayla.” He shook her slightly. “Are you okay?”

“Yes.” She gulped and then broke into a laugh. “Yes. I’m fine.” Feel a bit like an idiot, but I’m fine.

“Are you sure?”

Giggling, she clutched his shoulders for support. For the first time, she realized how close they were. Her legs slid against his as they paddled, and the very thing that had shocked her into stumbling was now pressed hard against her thigh.

He must have read the look on her face, because his eyes narrowed, his pupils dilating.

“Tayla—”

Oh, hell. Giving up the fight, she tugged his head down. Closed her lips over his. He groaned and swiveled her around. She barely even noticed when her back hit the slippery surface of the stone.
